Good Day Sunshine!

On a historic day in Massachusetts, when the Federal Government gave the go ahead for Cape Wind to proceed, we got our own good news about renewable energy.

We have incorporated the solar thermal and solar photovoltaic systems into the Fort Lewis College Student Union energy model and the resulting annual energy cost savings are projected to be over 8%. The solar thermal and solar photovolaic systems were funded by a $300,000 grant from the Department of Local Affairs (DOLA) Energy and Mineral Impact Assistance Program. You can see the orientation and distribution of the solar thermal system at the high roof in the design-phase rendering below. The lower roof is divided between approximately 4500 sf of vegetated roof, and an occupiable roof terrace accessible from the dining area and grille.

This took a team effort from everyone, but special thanks to Fort Lewis CollegeHenderson Engineers, Architectural Energy Corporation and Okland Construction Company for their efforts.
